Perspective from John Piper on the upcoming election

November 1, 2008

John Piper doesn’t tell us who to vote for in this video – it’s an effort to address several facets we should be thinking through and help us have a fuller perspective as we face this election. I think it’s very helpful. (Having said that, I know this video has left some unsure about how strongly Piper opposes abortion. Please see the note at the bottom of this post for clarification.)

Outline:

  1. Womanhood
  2. Race
  3. Abortion
  4. Prophetic perspective
  5. Sovereignty of God
  6. Gospel

Piper mentioned “voting as theough you were not voting”. To read his blog article on the subject, click here.

* Please note that Piper has addressed abortion, and the whole argument of “single issue voting” elsewhere. His argument is a compelling one… The nutshell: no one thing will make someone good in office, just as no one thing will make someone a good spouse. BUT, there are several “one-issues” that would be enough to make someone a poor spouse, or to make someone unfit for office… Piper argues: “What do you think disqualifies a person from holding public office? I believe that the endorsement of the right to kill unborn children disqualifies a person from any position of public office. It’s simply the same as saying that the endorsement of racism, fraud, or bribery would disqualify him—except that child-killing is more serious than those…. These reflections have confirmed my conviction never to vote for a person who endorses such an evil—even if he could balance the budget tomorrow and end all taxation.” To read the full article, entitled, “One-issue politics, one-issue marriage, and the humane society“, click here.
