Are The Jehovah’s Witness Gone Yet?

February 10, 2010

I have been studying apologetics quite a bit lately—specifically Jehovah’s Witness doctrine. There has been a theme in all the cults that claim to worship the God of the bible: works based salvation. Rather than trusting in the person and work of Jesus Christ ALONE for salvation there is some additive. (Jesus + something=salvation).

While this seems to be the theme of such false religions there are a few other distinctive as well. They introduce another gospel that is contrary to the one true gospel of our Lord found in the pages of scripture. They claim the clear understanding of the bible cannot be grasped apart from an extra source (something the cult group produces to further “explain” the word of God). They teach the doctrines of men rather than the doctrines of the bible. They discourage personal bible reading apart from “study aids”. They steal glory from Jesus Christ and assign it to another person or name. For that reason I wanted to put together a short list of things that ought to be happening in, bible saturated, Christ exalting, churches and homes—that’s right Dads, I did say homes!

Proclaim the Gospel
1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (ESV) 1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you— unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

It’s that simple. We need to proclaim it to our own hearts that are prone to wonder, to our children, our spouses, friends, neighbors, teachers and telemarketers—anyone that will listen!

Romans 1:16 (ESV) For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Point to God’s Word as The Authority
I have to say that I do agree with something that Jehovah’s Witnesses have published. Read this excerpt from a Jehovah’s Witness publication:
… from among the ranks of Jehovah’s people … haughty ones … say that it is sufficient to read the Bible exclusively, either alone or in small groups at home. But, strangely, through such “Bible reading,” they have reverted right back to the apostate doctrines that commentaries by Christendom’s clergy were teaching 100 years ago. (The Watchtower, August 15, 1981, pages 28–29)

Praise God!! Read those bibles so your family might love the doctrines of the bible and reject every form of man centered religion!!

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV) 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Present the Doctrines of the Bible.
Paul did this and those he taught were able to spot false teaching based on the sound doctrine they had received from Paul.

Romans 16:17 (ESV) I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.

Those that produce counterfeit money try to pass their work off on young inexperienced store clerks. They never go to the bank where the experts of authentic money are. Can your family detect counterfeit doctrine? Have they spent enough time with the truth that false teaching stands out like a sore thumb?

Promote bible reading.
The words “I’ve been reading my bible” ought to make our hearts glad as followers of Christ. The same is not true for the false teacher who fears his lies will be exposed by the light of scripture.

John 3:20-21 (ESV) 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

We should encourage regular bible reading in our homes and Dads need to be leading that charge. Wonderful things happen when God draws people to His word, both individually and as a family.

Praise Jesus Christ
We need to make much of Jesus Christ, the King of king and Lord of lords! While all around the world false religions defame the name of Christ and rob Him of either his supremacy or deity, His adopted sons and daughters with great humility and love should be shouting from the roof tops, in word and deed; “Jesus is THE way, THE truth and THE life!”

Acts 4:12-13 (ESV) 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.

Blessings,

Alvin

In the first paragraph you said many false religions say that “Jesus + something = Salvation”. But you have to have faith in Jesus and that his ransome sacrifice. But in James 2:17 it says “Thus, too, faith if it does not have works, is dead in itself”.
So we must have faith and works. Jehovah’s Wittnesses show this faith threw works by doing as Acts 10:42 says “Also he ordered us to preach to the people and to give a thorough wittness”. Now i would suggest that if you actually would like to learn about Jehovah’s Wittnesses then you should visit our site at Watchtower.org there you will find our true belifs.

    Sincerely,

      Thanks for your anonymous reply.
The verse you referenced, James 2:17 does not teach that we need to have faith plus works as a prerequisite to salvation. I know this is something that is confusing for J.W.s. However, we need to make sure that we look at the whole of scripture rather than one verse, misapplied and misunderstood.
In Galatians 5:6 Paul says, “In Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.” “Faith working through love.” What this verse means is that love is the way faith expresses itself and proves in life that it is real. Without love faith is dead. This is what James meant when he wrote, “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:17). So the works of love are the evidence of living faith. Without them a church is dead and a heart is dead. Here’s the way John put it in 1 John 3:14, “We know (or have the evidence) that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death.” Where love is absent faith is dead and we are dead—no matter whatever else is happening.
As for studying Jehovah’s Witnesses doctrine, I have a collection of Watch Tower material. Some going all the way back to a transcript of C.T. Russell perjuring himself in a court of law first saying that he could read the biblical languages and after being asked to do so before the court then admitting that he in fact could not. I also have availed myself of watchtower.org.
I would like to let you know of some resources that have helped many caught in the deception of the Watch tower not only escape but find true saving faith in the person and work our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ. David A. Reed is a former elder and member of the JW cult. He through the study of God’s word, apart from Watch tower propaganda, came to a biblical understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ. His heart is burdened for folks like yourself who are a part of a deceptive false gospel. He has put together a list of materials that have proven themselves to be very beneficial to Jehovah’s Witnesses searching for the real truth.
I want to leave you with a verse that the LORD has brought to my mind often as I’ve had Jehovah’s Witnesses at my door.

Philippians 2:5-11 (ESV) 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Though the Watch tower tries to make a BIG deal over the name Jehovah, notice what name God’s word makes a big deal over JESUS.
I would love to answer any further questions you have. I will pray that, by God’s grace, you’ll be granted the FAITH to see Jesus as God and Lord and the EVIDENCE (WORK) that your faith is genuine by a desire to spread true gospel of Jesus Christ (1 Cor 15:1-4) and proclaim the name that is a above EVERY NAME—JESUS CHRIST.
      Thanks,
      Alvin

  3. We appreciate your concerned in our history, and off course love is what we teach like (1 John 4:8) – its states 8 He that does not love has not come to know God, because God is love… You have good qualities defending your faith… as well as us Jehovah witnesses all around the world we exercise faith by listening to God teachings and putting them to practice with all of our brothers all around the world, teaching others to know the truth about GOD THE GOOD NEWS and who in fact his name is if you look in (Psalms 83:18) That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth. And that he deserves all the glory and if you look in (Rev 4:11 – “You are worthy, Jehovah, even our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power, because you created all things, and because of your will they existed and were created.” We also teach that Jesus is the Son of God (John 14:28 – YOU heard that I said to YOU, I am going away and I am coming [back] to YOU. If YOU loved me, YOU would rejoice that I am going my way to the Father, BECAUSE THE FATHER IS GREATER THAN I AM..” Also we teach Gods Kingdom if you look in (Daniel 2:44) 44 “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite;…

As you know we are all imperfect just like Adam and Eve who at first they had the privilege to share a close relationship with Jehovah God but failed by being disobedient.. (Romans 5:12- That is why, just as through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because they had all sinned—. And as we ALL know we ALL sin. But thanks to Jehovah God (John 3:16 – “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life. And we as the future of the earth, the earth will never be destroyed or depopulated but will become a peaceful paradise (Psalms 37: 29- The righteous themselves will possess the earth, And they will reside forever upon. Jehovah build the earth for a purpose (Isaiah 45:18 18 For this is what Jehovah has said, the Creator of the heavens, He the [true] God, the Former of the earth and the Maker of it, He the One who firmly established it, who did not create it simply for nothing, who formed it even to be inhabited: “I am Jehovah, and there is no one else. We know that it will be a paradise (Luke 23:43 – 43 And he said to him: “Truly I tell you today, You will be with me in Paradise.” And these are some of our basic teaching if anyone is interested in getting to know our

      Thanks for your comments.
However I have to strongly disagree with you.
You do not teach love. May I be candid with you? You teach a false gospel and you are leading many away from the true gospel. That is one of the most unloving things I can think of. In an effort to twist scripture to support your works based religion you forsake truly loving yourself and your hearers by rejecting the truth. There is one name given among men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:11-12 (ESV) 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” In the economy of the Trinity (the doctrine you reject thus making it impossible for you to understand John 14:28), the Father is pleased to give the Son (and HIS name) preeminence. That’s what Bible believing Christians do. Make much Jesus the God man!
Your reference to Revelation 4:11 is a great example of the deception of the New World Translatoin.
(Rev 4:11 – “You are worthy, Jehovah, even our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power, because you created all things, and because of your will they existed and were created.” NWT
      And Now Compare:
Revelation 4:11 (ESV) “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
The word κύριος is Lord, master or refers to the OT Jehovah or LORD. Here’s the inconsistency though.
Why is it that in John 13:13 (ESV) You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.
Is not translated John 13:13 You call me Teacher and Jehovah, and you are right, for so I am.
It is the same Greek word κύριος in both verses, so why the difference. That would contradict your doctrine.

You’re not imperfect, you’re a sinner like me. In need of a sinless Saviour who is Christ the Lord. If you deny that Jesus is God then you don’t not have a close relationship with Jehovah.
1 John 2:23 (ESV) No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.
The Heaven and the earth will pass away and be recreated.
Revelation 21:1 (ESV) Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
Please consider these quotes from the Watchtower Magazine that verify what I am saying:
      • “All who want to understand the Bible should appreciate that the “greatly diversified wisdom of God” can become known only through Jehovah’s channel of communication, the faithful and discreet slave.” The Watchtower, Oct. 1, 1994, p. 8.
      • “Thus the Bible is an organizational book and belongs to the Christian congregation as an organization, not to individuals, regardless of how sincerely they may believe that they can interpret the Bible.” The Watchtower, Oct. 1, 1967, p. 587.
In short, you are led by what the Watchtower says the Bible says. But if the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society is from God, then…
      • Why has it made false prophecies?
      • Why has it altered the translation of the Bible?
      • Why does the Watchtower say you will fall into apostasy if you read the Bible without the Watchtower? See their quotes
      • Why are you not allowed to examine your own organization and its problems?
      • Why does it tell you what to think and do?
Have you checked the documentation from the Watchtower Magazine? How do you know that the Watchtower is correct? Because it says it is?
Please don’t be offended by this. But when a group claims to be the prophet of God, yet mistranslates the Bible, takes verses out of context, makes false prophecies, and misquotes authorities all to make its position valid, its credibility is lost.

      It cannot be from God.
      Alvin.
